The story of Mary and Joseph in Two From Galilee is beautiful. Marjorie Holmes’s style of combining  biblical characters with  imagination powerfully enlightens readers.

We lagged a bit on A Redbird Christmas but we finally got it in the books.

Jennifer Neilson weaves the story of Felix, the Jewish boy from Austria-Hungary, Elsa, the daughter of a German officer who raises homing pigeons, Juliette, the young French girl whose father’s imprisoned, and Dimitri, the young Russian who is only 14 years old, sent to war by his country without a weapon. What an eye-opening way to learn about WWI! The different viewpoints and problems that bombard these youths will not be soon forgotten.

Hamlet, Prince of Denmark tells the timeless tale of conflict with a style unique to William Shakespeare. “Something is rotten in the state of Denmark” is actually an understatement. Hamlet’s uncle killed his father, became king, and married his mother in a month’s time, that’s quite a To Do list. Now he is out for Hamlet! Shakespeare wrote this after he lost his 11 year old son and his father. Definitely not a play for the faint of heart! “To read, or not to read, that is the question.”

The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie is where readers meet the famous Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, for the first time. The story is told from the viewpoint of a wounded soldier, Hastings, who is solving the murder right along with the readers. Poirot told Hastings, “You gave too much rein to your imagination. Imagination is a good servant, and a bad master.” If you’re looking for a baffling mystery to solve, this might be just the ticket.
